I am passionate about plants and their cultivation. I have learned about vegetable farming and organic weed control in many ways; as a farm worker and manager, farm owner, university researcher, author, a company rep in Europe and the US, consultant, extension educator, and technical college horticulture instructor. I also organize the Midwest Mechanical Weed Control Field Day. More than managing weeds with cultivation, I appreciate cultural weed management - strategies that manage weed populations by identifying problem weeds, learning about their personalities, and structuring the cropping system to target weak points in their life-cycles. I help farmers tweak management systems to put the heat on weeds - tillage, crop rotation, crop selection, and soil fertility can all be managed in ways that manage weeds. I teach engaging hands-on field days for farmers and ag advisors, and develop educational resources for organizations, and I consult for industry and farmers.
I enjoy community horticulture and beautifying my neighborhood through plants and people. Although a native Wisconsinite, I live in Minneapolis with my dear wife Julia.
